Different Methods for Coloring Plastic

Several methods of coloring plastic exist, and this includes cube blends, precolors, masterbatchs, and color compounding. Each method has its strengths and weaknesses, and so the processes cannot be used interchangeably. Speaking with color specialists is the best way to make true decisions about how to color plastics.

Specialty Compounding

The most popular form of coloring plastic is masterbatching. The process utilizes concentrated pigments that are mixed into a polymer resin. Color is added during the molding process. Masterbatch is added into the natural resin while being fed into the press. This gives the plastic its color and shape. Color matching is easy with this process as well, and so it is easy for a company to create vibrant colors.

Cube blends are similar to masterbatch but do not use presses or metering equipment. It is done as a dry blend that is ready to use with a natural polymer. If not being careful, it is possible to have color variations through this process.

Precolored resin is easy to use, but it does not have the customization options available to those using masterbatch. In this process, pigments are totally polymerized into a resin pack. Molders use it as it is supplied to them.
